Final Internship Reports + Summer Urban Corps Workers

We have carefully reviewed final internship reports for Water Department
summer Urban Corps workers, and they are returned herewith. Some worth-
while contributions were nade by the interns.

After analyzing the program, it appears that several misleading ideas
adversely influenced the students:

1. Some associated the name Urban Corpa with the masses of
underprivileged children and assumed that their jobs would be
tied in with these “runny nose children”, as one of them put it.

2. Others thought thet they would be involved in “sky blue”
research projects relative to social or physical changes.

Most of our Water Department work involves dow to earth, utilitarian programs
related to providing pure water to 650,000 citizen-customers. This requires
willing workers with positive attitudes. Most of the summer workers
exhibited negative, critical attitudes,

It is my feeling that a clear understanding of objectives and attitudes
vequired for an effective program should be worked out.
