Statement Of:

Capitol Avenue School Faculty and Staff

We, the members of the capitol Avenue School Faculty and Staff herewith

present a statement of commendation to our Mayor, the Police Force, and

interested citizens who demonstrated concern and fortitude by their presence

during the recent upheaval in our immediate community.

+4 is regrettable that such an incident could happen in our community.

This incident has futher brought inte sharp focus the glaring needs and

frustations of the people of this community and, more especially, our

children and youth.

As a result of our observation exposure, and participation in the life

of this community, we find these needs most urgent:

The development of low-rent housing tor low-income families,

Enferced housing cedes and sanitary codes for both landlords and
tenants.

Seme means ef encouraging businesses in this area to improve the
physical facilities and te adhere to enforcement of licensing
facilities and business practices, as well as health standards and
the better business code,

Te eliminate double sessions and ever crowded conditions by erecting

more and better designed scheols.




A well equipped and staffed community center.

Adequate parks and supervised play greunds.

Day Care centers for children of working low income families.
Expanded public health facilities and services to meet the needs of

this impacted community.s

Some provisions for the rehabilitation of the unemployable-the aged

and the physically and mentally handicapped.
We strongly urge that our capable city administrators attend and
implement the existing forces necessary to meet the stated needs.
These needs are critical, yet, we as educators, are likewise concerned
about the attitudes and behavior patterns of the children whom we serve,and

whe represent the future citizens of this community and our great city of
