Honorable Ivan Allen, Jr.
Mayor, City of Atlanta
City Hall

Atlanta, Georgia 30303

Dear Ivan:

Shortly after you became our mayor, we recall the tragic
event that caused you to set aside your own personal grief and
feelings of loss and fly overseas to attend to the business of
being Mayor of Atlanta. Therefore we were not at all surprised,
but merely proud when you again were found attending to the job
as Mayor during the race melee the other night. This time you
acted without regard to your personal safety and security.

Many of us wondered what our parts should have been in
this, Ivan, but, not knowing, had to allow you to take the field
alone in defence of the name and good reputation of our great
city. Your presence at the site until there was no further cause
for fear allowed the rest of us to accept the situation with con-
fidence that what did result would result - the law supported and
order restored.

We want you to convey our thanks to our fine police
force who themselves could have been more secure in failing to
retain constant control of the many and varied facets of such a
situation. We all glory\*and are proud of the many compliments
ode paver to you and them by such national figures as the Vice

resident.

If in any of the workings that will be required to prevent

the influence of SNCC from again being effective in our city, please
do not hesitate to call upon me in whatever fashion you think I

might be able to serve.
