Honorable Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr.
Atlanta, Georgia

My dear Sir:

The pictures and stories on the front pages of
our Los Angeles newspapers have given me hope to believe
that there are some still left in our Country who have
the moral courage of the men and women who struggled in
earlier days to make Americam what it is.

It was foolhardy of you to charge into the middle
of a riot scene - and I can not think of a single
instance in modern times wher an official of our
govemnment in any capacity has done so,-any one wio was
willing to be personally involved on the side of law and
order.

I have listened to ghowing reports of Atlanta from
a friend of mine, Mr. Dan Haughton of Lockheed, and now
I attribute much of what is happening there to its
Mayor.

Earlier I said it was foolhardy of you, but thank
you for giving a surge to my drooping spirits, I shall
long remember the picture of a determined man, wmafraid
to stand up for what he believes his duty. But do be
careful, there are not enough of such as youe

Sincerely
