Memo to the Mayor:
No one doubts your courage -- but there are
reasons to question your wisdom.
I never have voted for Lester Maddox, and
after the first primary I decided that if
Windbag Ellis and Axe-Handle Lester were
the best the democrats could offer I would
vote for Callaway. I still expect to do so.
However, your fiery blast, following fast on
the dolorous pronouncement of Martin Luther
King, gave Maddox an immediate a&vantage and
a fast start.
Now all Lester needs is for Ralph Magill and
the Atlanta newspapers to take out after him .
You Atlanta boys wilili persecute him into
another landslide victoryt
You seem to for get that Atlanta is not all
Georgia. If enough Atlantans publicly become
"ashamed of Georgia," and line up against
Maddox, the r est of the state will gleefully
elect Lester and feel no remorse about your
shame and sorr ow.
Remember Georgia voted for Goldwater (rather,
against LBJ and the national democrati c part y )
-- and can go f or Maddox . Every attack like
yours, coming out of Atlant a or Wa shington,
will make thousand s of votes for Maddox!
Maddox carried some 130 or 1.hO counties. I f
you make l~t he vot er s mad enough, they will
vot e for h im again.

P. 0. Box 512 -
Res. - 312 Central Are.
Dear Mr. Allen:
You should be ashamed of yourself to make the statement
you made on television a fe w days ago. I am shocked
beyond words you would publicly say such a thing
about a man running and WON in the Democratic primary.
Mr. Maddox was right when he said "Did he really make
this statement?" "It sounds like one King would have
made" and it did, Mr. Allen. There are many things
Mr. M. could have said about you, but he was more
a gentleman than you were. You are not so well liked
even by negroes, to say nothing about how disliked
you are by the whites. If you were a politician, I
might have expected you to make such a statement,
but you are FAR from a politician - just a public
servant for liberal Atlanta. Lets f~ce facts, you
have sold you city down the river - sold out to the
] iberals, both white and negro. This won't do you
any good, Mr. Allen.
Now about your going fishing on election day; that
sounds just like a negro, don't say that anymore.
Just keep your mouth shut if you can't say something
nice about the man. It proved to you that Georgia
is still a conservative state. Where has old
McGill, Patterson and Miss B. Lane got to go now?
In a hole I hope.
