As a former resident of your city, I take the liberty of
complimenting you personally for the strong show of
character, restraint, and yet rational strength you have
shown in recent weeks.
Your publicized performance in the handling of the recent
racial disturbances was commendable and your public
statements with regards to the folly of the Lester Maddox
election are even more praiseworthy.
The nation, and the south in particular, needs more leader-
ship from men not only with your ability, but your courage.
These traits are reflected in the progress your city has
made under your direction.
Congratulations! You are a credit to Atlanta and the
nation... :
