A SYNOPSIS OF THE PROPOSAL TO ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY ATLANTA, INC. FROM DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION CITY OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA FOR THE CALENDAR YEAR ENDING DECEMBER 31, 19 67 This proposal covers the following essential and special programs of recreation , social and cultural activities, physical education and summer employment opportunities for the disadvantaged and elderly of the City of Atlanta. The activities are in addition to normal City projects and represent an extended effort possible only thru the combined facilities of the City's "in-kind" contribution and cash grants from Economic Opportunity Atlanta, Inc. I. Develop an additional 12-1 4 playlots making a total of some 21, and operate from June 1st thru Labor Day. In addition, operate on an annual basis, rented houses at 255 Dodd Ave., S. W.; 71 Little St. , S. W. ; and 141 Walnut Street. Additional indoor facilities will possibly be obtained. Four locations will have portable swimming pools. II. Operate the second annual "Operati0.n Champ", beginning June 12 and running thru Labor Day. The program will entail providing recreation supervision for 35-40 locations within the target area, using schoo l facilities, public housing projects and parks. Activities will incl ude games, arts and crafts,physical fitness and cultural tours to various points of interest. III. Opera te a special water safety program at five municipal swi mmi ng pools, in conjunction with Atlart:a School system's physical education department. This program will serve the disadvantaged children o f the community, operating from August 6 thru September 1. Regu lar pool operations will cease August 27. It is essential that early approval be given to this proposal in that a large number o f personnel must be r e cruited, equipment and s upplies o rdered and in-service training begun for temporary staff. IV. Continue restoration and begin operat ion of Atlanta Recreation Camps, consisting of 55 acres o f developed property on Lake Allatoona near Acworth. The fa cil i ty will be used Ju ly 3 - August 18 f o r resident campi ng for disadvantaged children of our City; and, from August 1 8 August 25 for senior citizens o f our community . v. Extend hours of operation of established recreation programs ;using existing recreation centers and faci lit ies at 12 locations. VI. Inst itute and operate, on an annual basis, organized recrea tion programs in three Atlanta public hous ing authority high-rise apartrrents for the elderly. Namely Antoine Graves Homes, John O. Chiles Homes, and Pa l mer House. VII. Beg in development o f the 473 acre Atlanta Wi lderne ss Camps, near Cartersville on Lak e Allatoona, serve . a threefold purpose ; basic development of land, including construction of trails, clearing of underg rowth, ditching of roads etc.; provide mean ing ful and gainful employment for ne i ghborhood youth corps enro llee s; provide healthy recreation and a valuable outdoor experience for the enrollees . �SYNOPSIS OF BUOOETS Cash Grant Requested & om EOA Salaries Employee benefits Travel Equipment Games & Supplies Admi n i strative Exp.
