As a moderately active liberal, I am saddened by the incident; it should not have happened. Yet it was a s mall affair wh en compared with Watts and similar outbreaks in northern and western cities. Atlanta's. image as a soutre r n c ity which manages to handle its pr oblems i s not seriously dama ged9 You had some help from the police and from sensible ne gro leaders. But it was your coolness,courag e, and resourcefulness which saved the day. Yesterday you won a Cong ressional Medal or its equivalent, and you also achieved t he p ersonal stature in the minds of whites and colored which will enable you deal ef f ectively with the issues which remain.
