The meet in g went much better than we coul d have expected . I fee l very defin itely that this fair i s a handle to promote many things . Wherever I ' ve tal ked, the fair has been a most popular subject. Even the Met r opol itan Herai,{and. the Northside News have given it fa vorable treatment! As I s t ated Tuesday , those bui l dings proposed - and urban r enewal f unds i n the upcoming bond issue - c ould be Atlanta ' s contribut ion toward the fair . ( This was the pattern in Seattl e.) If the fa ir is as popul ar an idea as it seems to be it could be used to assist the bond issue . In regard to t he other matt er we discussed , l et me say that while my re~ction to Peyton Road wa s not f avorable, I did understand the truly desperate situation that faced yo u. Basically I th ink the Mayor is bein g placed in an impossibl e s it ua tion when he is asked to solve a problem so deep-rooted in human emotions and history as Atlant a ' s racial housin g . The government ' s t oo l s are so limited a nd those few availabl e so full of politica l dynamite that any solution wil l Qake enemies. It seems to me t hat the s t ory you have to t ell is important. Yo u fell heir to a situation not of yo ur making and you attempted t o lend your good offices to stabilizing a serious situation. In doing this you sacrificed your own position for the good of the City. The action t aken was drastic and distasteful, but the situat ion itself was drastic and distast eful.
