We wish to join with many others in pledging our support to you in your continuing efforts to preserve law and justice and a sense of reason among all the people of Atlanta. We commend your great courage in taking a personal hand in the control of these disturbances. Although your appearance at the sc e ne was b eyo nd the duties expected of the Mayor of Atlanta, ever y citizen should feel deep pride in what you did. W e do not ask our Mayor to endanger his life or safety, but having done so, you hav e caused each of us to feel taller as citizens. We are, naturally, concerned about the protection of private property, as well as the lives and well- b e ing of our peopl e. C e rtainly, we commend any effort toward strengthening th e means of this protec tion within the fram ew ork of our laws and institutions. Freedom should b e enjoyed by every citi ze n, but an e ngrain ed s ense of responsibility must be understood as a qualification of this freedom.
