Honorable Ivan Allen, Mayor
City of Atlanta
City Hall
Atlanta, Georgia
Dear Mayor Allen:
On behalf of the officers and directors of the Atlanta Real Estate Board,
I am wr iting to express the appreciation of the Board for your forthright
actions during the recent rioting in our City. We wish to join with many
others in pledging our support to you in your continuing efforts to preserve law and justice and a sense of reason among all the people of
Atlanta.
We commend your great courage in taking a personal hand in the control
of these disturbances. Although your appearance at the sc e ne was b eyo nd
the duties expected of the Mayor of Atlanta, ever y citizen should feel deep
pride in what you did. W e do not ask our Mayor to endanger his life or
safety, but having done so, you hav e caused each of us to feel taller as
citizens.
We are, naturally, concerned about the protection of private property,
as well as the lives and well- b e ing of our peopl e. C e rtainly, we commend
any effort toward strengthening th e means of this protec tion within the
fram ew ork of our laws and institutions. Freedom should b e enjoyed by
every citi ze n, but an e ngrain ed s ense of responsibility must be understood
as a qualification of this freedom. The Atlanta R e al Estate Board, its
officers, dir e ctors and members, stand b e hind you and the City Administration in your efforts to further these aims which we all share.
Strong and effective leadership in these times is necessary and we applaud
your exe rcis e of such leadership .
Yours very truly ,

Dear Mr. Allen:
The Session of the Orrnewood Park Presbyterian Church in regular
session on September 12, 1966, took action to commend you in your
patience and fortitude in face of the trying and explosive situation
of the past few days. We feel you have conducted yourself in a
Christian manner and exemplified the dignity due the high office you
hold as our mayor.
In the same action there were words of commendation for our police

elders at the Session meeting, Supt. J. L. Tuggle, and prayer was offered
for you and the other public servants who are endeavoring to maint ain

May God continue to keep your spiritual strength equal to the
