Mayor Ivan Allen, Jr.
City Hall
Atlanta, Georgia

Dear Mr. Allen:

From your recent press conference, you implied that this is
not a free country. You were very upset and made a lot of
nasty remarks because the people voted of their own choice
for Mr. Maddox in the primary election. Further, you said
the majority of the people who voted for Mr. Maddox were
illiterate and ignorant.

This is simply to advise I voted for Mr. Maddox, and even
though I do not have a 180 I.Q., I don't believe I'm ignorant.

The people of Georgia do not respect you very much, and every
time you and the Atlanta newspapers talk against Mr. Maddox,
you are just adding more votes to his election.

You mentioned that Mr. Maddox was not qualified for the job.
However, if you will recall, I don't think you were qualified
for the Mayor's job when you went into office.

I realize you were under duress by your Negro voters and were

trying to pacify them by remarking as you did. However, these
remarks were certainly uncalled for.
